East Alumni Create Cool App: Sketch-A-Song

- Abbey Lew
Four years ago, seven best friends, self-described as “goofy, smart, ultimate frisbee players” walked the halls of East High School. Today, the group stays connected through their common passions: frisbee, board games, ice cream, and most recently their company called 09 Line Development Co. (referring to both their graduation year and Ultimate Frisbee lineup). Last summer, they decided to forgo their summer internships and jobs and reunite in Denver. Jacob Zax, co-founder and business developer, explains, “East was where our friendship became strong and we have stayed best friends throughout college. We wanted to do a project together and start a company [and that’s how] we moved on to create the Sketch-a-Song app.”

The Real AP Scandal
By Harry Forbes
The College Board is holding us hostage
It’s not just them. The local legislature, school board, even the governor are in cohorts with the organization that administers that Standard Aptitude Test (SAT) and all Advanced Placement (AP) tests. The obscene fees that are levied on what’s supposed to be a free education are insane, not to mention immoral.
On any AP exam, you have the option to send your score to the college of your choice. This is a great way to show colleges demonstrated interest, and can sometimes be a huge difference between getting in to the university of your dreams and not. However, if you want to send your score to multiple schools because like every sane person you want to hedge your bets and not put all your eggs in one basket, or maybe you’re just interested in more than one school, you have to pay. You have to pay an extra $15, per school, to the College Board just to get it there, but $25 if you want it to arrive in a timely fashion.

Ten Things I Wish I’d Known as a Freshman
By Joie Akerson
1) There’s a graceful way to be embarrassed. My years at East are not so much distinguishable by my classes or teachers, but rather by the various ways I humiliated myself from year to year. As a freshman I walked from the depths of the third floor down to the first with a gushing bloody nose without realizing it. Click to read more…
Dear Citizens of Shelby County, Alabama
I understand that needing redistricting and other election regulations to be approved by the Department of Justice is inconvenient for you. I understand that you and people in other counties with histories of
discrimination are tired of being stereotyped and stigmatized because of the racism of your forbearers and I understand that you’re not fans of the federal government regulating more than you say it needs to. What I don’t understand is why you would want to completely get rid of Section 5 of the 1965 Voting Rights Act, as you asked the court to do in Shelby County v. Holder (currently pending before the Supreme Court).
We should keep Section 5. Most importantly, it is in no way, shape, or form unconstitutional. This matters to the lawyers making the arguments, and to the Court as they make their decision, but, unfortunately, is not what will be going through most people’s minds. The other single-most important reason that we shouldn’t get rid of Section 5 of the VRA is because it’s actually working.
Modern Vampires of the City by Vampire Weekend: A Track-by-Track Review
- Adelaide Sandvold
Overall Score: 8.5/10
Obvious Bicycle-The album begins with a delicate tune accompanied by melancholy lyrics such as, “You ought to spare your face the razor/ Because no one’s gonna spare their time for you.” Lead singer Ezra Koenig’s voice maintains its pure sound as he effortlessly demonstrates a wide vocal range. It is pleasant to listen to, just too slow to be effective as the opening song. Score: 8/10

East Art Walk
- Natalie Torres
For months, the art department intently focused on throwing an event that would
highlight East High School’s talent. Various teachers spent countless hours working on the East High Art Walk since one of the ultimate goals was to make it bigger and more amazing than past years. Although their task was not an easy one, these teachers still managed to throw a spectacular event that many students had been anxiously looking forward to.The East Art walk is one of the rare opportunities in which our school’s art department is showcased for the whole community.
First Friday at Santa Fe
Each first Friday of the moths, art galleries across Denver put on their best faces and open up for public exhibitions. The high concentration of galleries along Santa Fe has made these nights into a bigger event. It draws in food trucks, street artists, musicians, and lots and lots of people. If you like art, then take some time to come to this once a month spectacle.
The Greater Good
- Daniel Hartman-Strawn
Our school has seen its share of shocking, horrifying, and saddening incidents. From gang violence to prom-night disasters, and now a horrendous hit-and-run, our community knows what it is to experience the sensations of uncertainty and insecurity that accompany any tragedy. What has always gladdened me in the wake of such events has been the outpouring of support and positive emotion from the student body.

East High School Compliments
- Marin Johnson
While scrolling through my facebook feed the other night I happened to come across a page called East High School compliments and another called East High School confessions. I noticed that many mutual friends of mine had already liked this page so I decided to go see what it was all about. It is very similar to what some college universities have for example CU Boulder. It is a page where students are able to anonymously post confessions they have or to compliment someone they so deeply admire.
The New 100 Dollar Bill Looks like a Million Bucks!
By Harry Forbes, Resident Currency Reviewer
Everyone who’s anyone is talking about the brand-spankin’-new hundred dollar bills announced by the Treasury Department last week. Even though a lot of seasoned currency appreciators, like sophomore Niall Comaskey, were scared about the new bill, most were pleasantly surprised. “I know this has been in the works for ten years. I can totally appreciate the fact that it takes ten years to design a dollar bill,” says Comaskey. “I’m not gonna lie, I was a little scared, but this shattered my expectations and blew my face [off]. It was well worth the wait.”

Having a big team is not a burden, however. Topf has chosen to make girls’ tennis a no-cut sport. She says that the reason behind this decision is mostly philosophical. “Tennis is a sport that teaches discipline and sportsmanship, and it’s a sport you can play at any age,” she says. “I think it is important that all athletes who want that experience should be able to have it.”
Red, White and Green: Treat Every Day as Earth Day
-Abbey Lew
An empty Cheetos bag, a banana peel, old homework, a styrofoam take-out box, a half-full can of Coke, and a couple of used tissues are among the miscellaneous trash found in one of East’s recycling bins. Yet, few students would know that only one of those objects correctly belongs in recycling: the old homework. Everything else is contaminating the recyclables and considered trash.

Project Success – Substance Abuse Prevention

- Joie Akerson
What is the program? What is its affiliation?
Denver Children’s Home, non-project agency here in Denver. What they did is they have a state grant to run this program called Project Success. It’s basically a substance abuse prevention program but I do a lot of other things too. Prevention can entail a lot of other things too like dealing with stress, relationships, all kinds of different things. That’s how I got here, I’m here full time, this is my third year.
How did you get personally involved?
It just interests me, how addiction can take over a person. And I do believe it’s a disease, and I believe we have to get the stigma of addiction away.

Girls Soccer Honors 1983 State Champs With Merciful Victory
- Eli Goldin
On Friday, the 22nd of March, the 1983 girls soccer state championship team celebrated the thirtieth anniversary of the year that they won the most coveted trophy in Colorado girls soccer. At halftime of the game against South High the women who took home the metal three decades ago were honored at midfield. The current girls varsity joined them in celebration and smiles were illuminating from faces in attendance. The girls continued to win the game 10-0, honoring the East soccer program and the 1983 state champs. For thirty years East soccer has dominated on the field, and the team is hopeful that they will repeat what the ‘83 team was able to do.
The Keyboard is Mightier Than the Bomb

- Noah Reynolds
The year is 1971, and the conflict in Vietnam is slowly coming to an end. A young ambitious journalist named Daniel Ellsberg has in his possession a cluster of top secret military documents officially named The United States – Vietnam Relations, 1945–1967 (a study prepared by the Department of Defense). Ellsberg is technically obtaining these documents illegally. In late 1969 with the assistance of his former RAND Corporation colleague Anthony Russo and the staff of Senator Edward Kennedy, Ellsberg secretly made several sets of photocopies of the classified documents to which he had access; these later became known as the Pentagon Papers.

Rockies’ Opening Day
- Brody Rastall
What started as what seemed to be yet another disappointing home opener for the Colorado Rockies, changed direction as fast as a runner rounding third. The Colorado Rockies with a winning record of 3-1 played the San Diego Padres today at Coors Field. The Padres quickly scored one run in the first inning which was left unanswered until the third inning when the Rockies scored 3 runs, one being a home run by Wilin Rosario. The final score was 5-2 Rockies. With a mostly new coaching staff, the Colorado Rockies are showing hopes of an exciting season.
The success of the team is what is expected more now than ever considering it is the Rockies 20th anniversary season. Tomorrow night the Rockies continue their three game series against the Padres with a home game starting at 6:10. In a special promotion DPS students and teachers can get ten dollar third level tickets by using the promo code DPS at checkout. Hopefully their winning streak continues and the Rockies can begin to make a name for themselves this season.
